(185) Cinder Track

The Cinder Track is a walking/cycling route that follows the course of what was once the railway line from Whitby to Scarborough. This is a view from near Ravenscar, approximately half way between Whitby and Scarborough.

Ravenscar today is not much more than a hotel and a few houses but at the turn of the 19th–20th century, plans were made to turn the village into a holiday resort to rival nearby Scarborough. Roads were laid out, some houses were built and sewers were laid. Because of the long trek to its rocky beach, Ravenscar never achieved popularity, and the development was left unfinished – a town with sewers and streets but no houses.

This is a National Trust video showing how the town could have developed and there are some great aerial views of the area.
