This is a hefty 50mm (2") thick chunk of old pine that was once a mantelpiece. Both sides will be varnished and the colours will look richer. Without looking at any comments below, which side would you choose to have visible?

I will tell you that next-door's three-year-old voted without hesitation for the painty side. After she'd voted, I showed her one knot that I thought looked like a feather. Then she found another feather. I told her that the piece of wood used to be a tree trunk and the knots were where the branches used to grow out. Silence while she thought.
