Ridgeway and ditch

Today we left the chalk downs west of the Thames behind & followed the Ridgeway along Grimms ditch to Nuffield through leafy beech woods. I think these are galls on the tree?
Grimms ditch is thought to be late Iron Age or early Roman & built to bar passage to South Oxfordshire.
