Wrong way down the motorway

Jen and I headed north to Hamilton this afternoon. We were bobbing nicely along the A74M north of Carlisle when there was, sadly, a serious accident a couple of miles ahead.  What followed was some considerable time stationary in the heat with many emergency vehicles going by on the hard shoulder and two air ambulances overhead.

The chaps in the car in front came to tell us that the plan was to take us off the motorway by turning us around and really it was a procedure extremely well organised with trucks making space for cars to get through to the hard shoulder, where we turned south to the slip road of the previous junction.  That gave the trucks room to manoeuvre across the three lanes.  It was then a long convoy along a parallel B road to a point where  we were able to rejoin the motorway.  I do hope that folks caught up in the accident are okay.

Meanwhile, we are now safely ensconced on garden chairs on the deck of Jen and Pete’s empty new home, eating pizza in the evening light.  Tomorrow the removal guys will arrive with their belongings and the first part of their new adventure will begin!
