Marble Hill

This is Old Government House Mark 11. It was built in 1881 to replace the current Old Government House, and was called Marbe Hill. It sits above some large marble deposits in the Adelaide Hills in a high fire risk area.

Sadly in 1955 is was completely destroyed during terrible bushfires when many lives and houses were lost. It remained derelict like this for many years because the huge cost of restoration was beyond the priorities of the state's budget.

It has now been sold to a private owner who is undertaking the restoration work. In November we will be visiting as a group to see the progress being made. It is my guess that the budget needed for a full restoration could be in excess of 15 million dollars.
