In Disguise

I took a step back when I first saw this creature in the garden. About 2cm long and with the markings of a hornet, I approached warily with the camera.

With the help of Google, I found that this is actually a hoverfly - Britain's largest - and is called (appropriately enough) the Hornet Mimic Hoverfly, a harmless nectar feeder. One of the good guys.
