Fortunately, being mentally dulled by nothing more than getting back quite late last night, I was able to react sufficiently swiftly to grab the wingpiglet before he made it out of the room when he woke up and sprinted straight for the door, preventing him waking up and grandparents or testing the mistrusted stairgate. He never explained what he was attempting to do but just went immediately but briefly back to sleep, though then started an hour and a half of not-going-back-to-sleep before I gave up and took him down for breakfast. I wasn't in the ideal condition to remember potential year-ago photo-ops but fortunately took this before I got to pop back upstairs to sleep for an extra hour before driving back home.
