On Angel Wings - Hexham Abbey

This morning we decided to take a trip to the nearby town of Hexham and soon discovered Hexham Abbey with its 1300 + year history. There were many interesting historical highlights such as a 2000 year old massive carved Roman stone but something much more recent caught our eye.

Suspended 45 feet up are 4500 origami angels - an installation known as “On Angel Wings” - each one with dedications commemorating loved ones affected by the Covid -19 pandemic and made by local schools, volunteers, Abbey staff and members of the public.

I liked the fact that the angels are high enough that dedications can’t be read from the ground and as they say keeping those thoughts and memories private but still present, much like a prayer.

Tomorrow we head for home but we have enjoyed this short break on our journey.
