manually rotating sluice...

The Grote Sluis is situated between the harbor and the inland waterway that enters the city along the Franekereind and the Noordijs. This lock possibly dates from 1524. The lock chamber has four pairs of wooden pointed doors. Over one end is a new bascule bridge, the Leeuwenbrug, and over the other end a roller bridge. At the lock there is an 18th-century lockkeeper's house and four shield-bearing lions, who give names to the Lion Bridge.
