Herring Lassies

Yesterday in Whitby I was intrigued by the wire sculptures all over the town. A Google revealed they are part of the Whitby Walking Heritage Trail and features local artist Emma Stothard’s unique life-size sculptures inspired by Whitby’s fishing heritage.

I particularly liked 'Herring Lassies', which features two women gutting fish at a table and is inspired by the women who would follow the herring fleet as it worked its way down from Scotland to Lowestoft. These women would lodge in towns like Whitby and gut and pack the herring brought in from sea.

I love Whitby anyway, and this has added a little extra interest.
