Special walk.

A very heavy shower driving up the A1made us a bit worried, but fortunately the weather cleared before we ( eventually as SatNav Val missed a turning) reached our destination Myton- on - Swale and the start of our walk.

It was lovely to have our granddaughter, Hannah join us too.
She made sense of the directions, as again we started walking in the wrong direction! Must say the map and leaflet wasn’t very clear.

So we walked past the old village pump, ( top right) over the bridge, ( top left) which was built in 1868 and modelled on London’s Westminster Bridge.
The path then took us along the side of the River Swale and round the fields where the Battle of Myton took place in 1319 between the Scots raiders and the local Englishmen led by William Melton, Archbishop of York.
The English lost, and amongst the dead and injured were hundreds of monks, their once- white robes torn and bloodstained, which gave this day of slaughter another name. The White Battle.

Back to the village for our picnic, before we did the rest of the walk in the other direction, which eventually took us past the magnificent Myton Hall, once home of the late Sir Ken Morrison.
The bottom left photo is Hannah stood in front of some very high corn.
( reminded me of the song in Oklahoma . “ Oh what a beautiful morning” and the line, “ the corn is as high as an elephant’ eye.” )
Back to the car and passed the Old school house, with the school bell still intact. ( bottom right)
The weather stayed warm and sunny until just before we reached the car and we felt a few spots of rain. However the black cloud passed over and we stayed dry.

About 6 miles.
Back home, glad of a sit down, we sat out in the garden with a refreshing Magnum.
A very enjoyable day, and such a pleasure to have Hannah with us too.
