St. George's Tron Church Clock

After a meeting in town this afternoon, I walked past Nelson Mandela Square and the sun was highlighting the clock on St. George's Tron Church. With the blue sky and the moon rising it was an easy choice for my blip.

The Church is a Glasgow Landmark and was built on its present site in Buchanan Street in 1808. When this church was built, much around it was still open fields. William Stark, who designed St. George's, was regarded by Sir Walter Scott as the great genius of Scottish architects. It was, apparently, William Stark's idea to have statues of the four evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, where the obelisks now stand.

The Church underwent a £3.1m renovation in 2008-9 to create a bright, comfortable, spacious place of worship.

Recently in the news, as the congregation of the church held its final service before leaving the Church of Scotland. St George's Tron Church took the decision over the Kirk's acceptance of gay ministers. The dispute between it and the Church of Scotland has led to a bitter dispute over assets.
