Surfing

The moorhen family is the talk of Johnston Gardens at the moment. It seems mum has successfully hatched four chicks. I was told the chicks were seen yesterday going to the island in the pond during the day, but returning to the nest for the night.

Mum was on the nest when I arrived, no doubt having a rest. While I watched she got up and went for a paddle so I was able to see there were no chicks in the nest. Presumably off to the island again where they are we'll protected from gulls.

This moorhen looks like it is doing some surfing in the rapids near where the pond flows out of the Garden.
