Beautiful Devon – Start Point

I fancied a look at a lighthouse, my first view in several years, so we drove to Start Point (named, apparently, after the Anglo-Saxon for a tail, as in how the outcrop appears).  The walk down to the lighthouse is fairly long and a bit disappointing when you encounter locked gates on the perimeter.  But climb over the rise on the landward side and you find an exciting coast with a mix of rocks and sandy beaches.  Great Mattiscombe beach is particularly lovely . . . and secluded.

And while on that side of the point I took this photo back towards the lighthouse, with a slightly manufactured sky . . .
