Ode to a Toad

Tiny toad, you look so young,
your simple praises yet unsung.
Your subtle colours, textured art,
blending with the garden path,
you contemplate your speckled world,
where long-dead leaves have dryly curled.

Tiny toad, there's colour too:
butterflies in skies of blue,
daisy, poppy, buttercup.
If only once you might look up...
but, no: the ground is all you see,
and grubs and insects for your tea.

Yet, more in fear, I think, than glee,
today, your tiny eye saw me!
