What's in a Name?

This butterfly is usually called Wanderer in Australia (webpage from Australian Museum). It originated in the Americas where it is called Monarch, and arrived in Australia in the 1870s. It is now widespread here, and throughout the Pacific region.

The name Wanderer is given because it migrates seasonally over great distances. The name Monarch is said to have been given in honour of King William III of England, as the butterfly's main colour is that of the king's secondary title of Prince of Orange (quoting from Wikipedia).
