The Boss

I don’t know if there are bigger beetles, but I’m sure in this part of the world the stag beetle is the biggest. They are few and far between and always seem to be in completely in the wrong place (this one was under the wheels of our car on the drive). 

As a child one decided to attach itself to my finger (a male with the antler-like jaws). A very painful experience and I won’t be picking one up any time soon. 

But I do love them - so big and beefy. Definitely the Boss of the beetle world.

They are an endangered species.
