...2012 appears to have been a great year for the newts that live in the cistern in the orto. In addition to the usual healthy population of palmate newts, there were several adult male and female Italian Crested Newts (Triturus carnifex), and at least six young ones, when I went for a lunchtime stroll in the olive groves. Unfortunately, the water is always cloudy and they tend to bury themselves in the algae at the bottom when people approach. This young female was a bit slower to dive, so I was able to get a better image than usual. One day, I may catch some to photograph properly...
