Empty

Went over to Venlo today, had to pass this old Border Crossing Post, it has been empty for years now, its Dutch partner a few hundred yards away has been long sold and is now a private house. Here the German Customs used to stop foreign, ie not German, cars and search them for smuggled goods.
On German holidays, which were not holidays in Holland, thousands of Germans flocked over the Border to buy cigarettes, coffee and eggs in Venlo. The queues on the return journey were kilometers long waiting to cross the border. In Venlo the Dutch traffic wardens had a field day giving tickets to any German plated car that broke the law by the slightest amount. The Tow Trucks did a great business! Alll good clean fun! Today it is hard to remember when we had to show Passports to go into Venlo, or anywhere else over the Border, hey ho, happy days...
