Durham Cathedral

Durham, on a bitterly cold and freezing March day. '"It is nitthering", said M. "Aye Wai" (sic), said D in an unrepeatable Geordie accent. The we skipped along by the river, over the bridge, and then 'mooched' around the covered-in market. A quick 'Costa coffee' and then it was up the hill to the obligatory tour around the ancient palace of worship. One glaring error was that Justin Portal Welby's name was still carved on the marble bishops plaque as being the current incumbent. We were thinking he was the newly enthroned 'Religious Master of the Universe, ArchBishop of Canterbury, and a past Oil Executive par excellence.

The highlight revolved around listening to the choir practicing. They were really good and it added to the atmosphere. A close second was the tomb of St Cuthbert and the statue of Cuthbert, headless himself, holding the head of King St Oswald (Ancient slayer of Heathens in the emerging Northumbrian landscape).

We were going to travel up to the Farne Islands, but the threat of freezing snow and ice put us off. We just wanted to see if they can get that big container ship off the rocks, as we are worried about the seals and the birds.

Back to Geordieland and a compulsory Friday night curry with family. Altogether it was a 'Grand Day Out'.
