Life in Newburgh on Ythan

An iron munching bacterium.

We came across this colourful sight on the surface of a stream on  Forvie Moor. No, it’s not an oil slick but rather the work of a bacterium known as Leptothrix discophora which makes its living by oxidizing iron and other metals leaving this colourful film on the surface of the water.
