Day 13 Devon and Dorset

Today was sadly our last full day and it was another stunner. The sun came out just after we arrived in Weymouth and thankfully stayed for the rest of the day. After trying to park at the no longer in use Park and Ride (very odd), and then walking along the promenade by the beach, we were pleased to find the harbour area with lovely cafés and a nice atmosphere. We watched the boats pass under the bascule bridge, had a cuppa while people watching and then had some lunch. I wanted to walk to Portland to see the lighthouse and the sculptures but didn't realise how far away they were. We set off and passed some beautiful scenery around Portland Bay before finally arriving in Portland and collapsing in the café at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. This is where the Olympic sailing events took place in 2012 and we even saw a GB boat from this year as we got our drinks. It was nice relaxing with a drink and watching the next generation of olympians (hopefully) training.
The sculpture park in a disused quarry and the lighthouse were still miles away so we decided to get the bus back to Weymouth, do some shopping and then drive to the lighthouse.
Portland Bill is beautiful and I'd definitely recommend a visit if you're in the area. The views were lovely and it's what I'd call a 'proper' lighthouse with a red stripe around it! We visited as the light was starting to change into that red glow that proceeds sunset and it was perfect. On the way back down, we stopped at a viewpoint and it was a great way to end our holiday as in the distance were all the places that we'd visited during our stay in South Devon and Dorset. Having never visited before, I think I prefer Dorset to Devon and Cornwall.
