Gutenberg Bible

At the brilliant Huntington library / gallery / collection in San Marino Ca. The first substantial book printed with movable type. Around 1455. The historical importance is obviously huge, but I hadn't realise that it is also a beautiful object. And hard to distinguish from the manuscript copies which were previously how the bible was distributed.
The Huntington is a fine place to spend a day in LA, with very good galleries of US and European art, fabulous gardens, and a great history of science collection of books. First editions and manuscripts take you as close as you can get to the authors. Newton's own annotated copy of the first edition of his Principia! Gosh wow etc.
