Purton Ships' Grave Yard

The land between the canal and river was dangerously narrow in 1909 leading to a river bank collapse and this was the catalyst for action.  The ships were deliberately beached on this stretch of the estuary from 1909 onwards to stop erosion and reinforce the river banks. Most were left in the 1950's but of the eighty many are no longer visible being covered with silt and long grass.  Today we admired the industrial heritage of the area and this colourful Purton Hulk stood out the most for me.
