Laughing kookaburra

The kookaburra is related to the kingfisher although it rarely eats fish. Its name comes from a word in the Wiradjuri language, guugubarra, onomatopoeic of its call.

There are four species native to Australia and New Guinea. This one is the laughing kookaburra and is native to eastern Australia.

Kookaburras are carnivorous, preying on small mammals and reptiles. They mate for life and live in close family groups. Siblings from previous seasons stay around for up to three years and help mum and dad with incubation of eggs and looking after new chicks. What good birds!

Stay well all.
