Syd Barrett Day

There isn't a Syd Barrett day, but I thought we should have one. Roger ‘Syd’ Barrett was a founder member of Pink Floyd and wrote most of their first album, The Piper At the Gates Of Dawn. In 1967 he had a complete breakdown, probably drug induced. Pink Floyd’s Shine On You Crazy Diamond is about him. Here is my poem about Syd.

emily cries, but misunderstands
in a field of barley the scarecrow stands
for you and me and dominos
the day goes by

who was the young man
with the anthracite eyes
singing elfin ditties
that seemed kinda catchy
while his face turned blue
and melted
and his mind went out to lunch
and helter-skeltered.

syd the beat
syd the mystic
syd on his bike
which you could ride
 if you liked
syd the madcap who’d give you
anything
and
everything
for the
tring-tring
of the
i ching

shine on you piper
you painter, you martyr
shine on you diamond
you tigger, you sparkler
i hope you’re at home
with a wine drinking gnome
on a pink unicorn
at the gates of the dawn

Here you can hear Syd's whimsical song, Bike.
