Sugarcane burning

Down on the plains below where we live are hundreds and hundreds of hectares of sugarcane plantations.  Before harvest many farmers burn their fields, to rid the cane of dried undergrowth which would otherwise be harvested along with the cane.  It is difficult, dirty and dangerous work for these farmers and is mainly done at night.

Even though we are kilometres from the nearest fields (as you can tell from the somewhat blurry blip), we often come out to black ash scattered across our verandahs, lifted by the breezes.
