Phosphorescence

This is a beautiful book, and a book for the times.
 
It starts with phosphorescence, the "living light" that you see in fireflies, in jellyfish, in the sea at night. Then in Julia’s hands phosphorescence becomes a metaphor for the "inner light", the flashes of awe and wonder and hope that sustain us when the world goes dark.
 
Dr Julia Baird is a respected historian and journalist. She has written an acclaimed biography of Queen Victoria and she hosts the ABC’s nightly current affairs program, The Drum. Some rare people seem to have more grace, more humanity and more largeness of spirit than most of us. I think Julia is one of those.
