Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Another old tooth.

This is a fossil tooth from a species of Otodus, an extinct genus of predatory mackerel sharks which lived from the Paleocene to the Miocene epoch (66-20 million years ago). The largest Otodus species were up to 50 feet in length, three times the length of a modern great white shark!! Not to be messed with!

According to my old friend Prof. Google, the name Otodus comes from Ancient Greek ὠτ (ōt, meaning "ear") and ὀδούς (odoús, meaning "tooth") – thus, "ear-shaped tooth".
