In My Life

Ward SM8...

No surprise that this sight should capture my attention, as back in February I expressed an interest in 'bricked-up' doors and windows (see image 54/365 - 'Bricked Up...' Feb 23rd). Standing about 40ft high, the sign above the lower blocked entrance states 'Ward SM8' and is the last remaining clue to how the original St Mary's hospital in Manchester was once joined to a 1960s purpose built complex (where our daughters were born) that has since been demolished. With a wide range of world class medical services for women, babies and children, Saint Mary's hospital has had a long and important history in Manchester. Over recent years the old 60s hospital has been replaced with a new complex opening in the summer of 2009 as part of the Central Manchester Hospitals campus. The building work has continued and is now focused on the listed facade on the corner of Hathersage Road and Oxford Road and this image is taken from the rear of those buildings.
