‘That’s all folks….’

I’ve been following the ups and downs of the wildlife on the pond all summer, and the attempts of the various species to raise offspring, with varying degrees of success!

The swans were first, and most successful, producing what are now three strapping adolescents at their first attempt. The ducks, moorhens and coots have had a more difficult time - the coots in particular.

There were in fact two sets of coots. The original, well established pair have had a nest at one end of the pond for several years. This year, however, despite great persistence and producing three different broods over the summer - a total of nearly 20 chicks - they failed to see any of their offspring survive more than a few days.

Their nest is now a rather sad sight. Practically submerged, in a considerable state of disrepair, overrun with vegetation, and - when I passed by - only one coot to be seen….
