Greenham Common

Today I had a trip to Greenham Peace Garden at Newbury which is on the site of one of the gates where women camped for 18 years to protest against the siting of Cruise Missiles at the US base at Greenham Common. Back in the 1980s I was a member of a local CND group and we got involved in various demonstrations at Greenham Common. The friends I went with today, Gill and Will were also involved. It felt very poignant to be there. The base exists no more, there is an industrial estate there instead and much of the land has reverted to the common which was originally there. This photo is of a fountain in the garden in the shape of a spiral. It’s hard to read here because it has a lot of lichen on it but it reads ‘you can’t kill the spirit’.
