Johnny Onion

When we were very small, Breton onion growers would pour off the ferry from France and sell the crop door to door. There was a uniform of stripey jumpers and berets, Gauloises or Gitanes optional, and they sold strings of onions hanging from the handlebars of antiquated bikes.

Today we found these shallots in the Beauly greengrocers. Distributed by Les Johnnies de Roscoff. The tradition lives on.
