Rose Hips

These are a sure sign that we are coming to the end of our Summer. These are the hips from a white Rosa Rugosa that seems to flower all Summer long.
Rose hip syrup was a really important product for introducing Vitamin C into our diets during the war, when citrus fruit was hard to come by. This is an interesting snippet:

During WWII children were paid 3d per lb to collect rose hips as a source of much-needed vitamin C. The officially approved receipt for syrup allowed 2 lbs of minced hips boiled with 3 pints of water, very thoroughly strained, then boiled down to 1½ pints with 1¼ lbs of sugar.
