Ruined

The A72 between Peebles and Galashiels is a beautiful route in all seasons, but it looked specially picturesque in the snow today. The ruin you can see on the right is Elibank Castle In 1611 this was home to Sir Gideon Murray, his wife Margaret and their children. A certain William Scott tried to steal some cattle from them but was caught and imprisoned in the dungeons. Given the choice between hanging or marrying the ugly daughter of the Murrays, Agnes, or Muckle Moothed Meg, William married her. Walter Scott was one of their descendants and told their tale in his Minstrelsy of the Scottish Borders
