Life On The Old Dog

Despite an abundance of potential metaphors for the decaying tree, I found myself struggling for a title. Thoughts of its inevitable demise, resilience against the odds, resources for rejuvenation all crossed my mind, along with references to one's own state in life.

In the end I opted for a positive twist in the tree's usefulness as a host for the fungi.

The appeal of the image lies in the contrast of a (relatively) saturated subject against the darker monotones of the woodland behind. Also the texture in the trunk and its relationship with the slender white speckled neighbour behind it. I emphasised the tree's importance with a narrow depth of field.
