Abbey Wall

Today's the day ....................... to get wet

Boy, did it rain here today.

It turned the bottom of the trenches excavated during the past few months for the Tongland Abbey Archaeological Dig into a complete quagmire within half an hour.  We eventually had to abandon ship - and seek shelter under the trees for an extended coffee break.  Fortunately, the weather did improve after that and although it was rather a battle with the mud for the rest of the day, at least we got some digging in.

In fact, a very exciting discovery of a new wall was made in one of the trenches by John and Jerry - that links up with what we've been calling the Brewhouse.  It makes it into an even bigger structure than was thought with perhaps a completely different purpose. The latest suggestion put forward is a swimming pool for the monks - or perhaps a communal jakoozie.

Or it could be that all that rain had gone to our heads .....................?!
