The Gate

The Gate

I took a turn to the left,
the churchyard ahead of me
lit with the most extraordinary
autumn midday sun.

The gate latch
lifted easily to my tender touch,
a pleasurable moment
in an otherwise tumultuous day.

Through the fading graveyard
and to the ancient path
across the sweetcorn field
heavily laden with pure gold.

Walking in an early October day
is easy because the pregnant rains
have not yet made
these still welcoming fields impassable.

I smile at that.
A small victory
in the face of
an army of adversaries.
