Guildhall, City of London

I have been at a dinner this evening in the Guildhall in the heart of the City of London. Not a frequent occurrence, I assure you - indeed the first time I have ever been invited to such a function. The Guildhall is 600 years old and was built on the site of a Roman amphitheatre, a centre of entertainment when the Romans occupied England. The remains of the amphitheatre have been excavated and can be viewed from a gallery in the basement of the Guildhall. At dinner, my table was facing this impressive sculptured tableau in memory of Admiral Lord Nelson who died in action at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. His tomb is not far away in St Paul's Cathedral and,  of course, his statue sits atop a very tall column in Trafalgar Square guarded by four forbidding lions. The second picture is an exterior shot of the Guildhall Art Gallery through which we accessed the banqueting hall.
