HISTORIC UCKFIELD TOUR: THE OLD BRIDGE

It hasn't taken Wilson as long as I'd expected (or hoped) to prepare his latest venture – now it remains only to see whether he's found anything worthwhile to say about Historic Uckfield
In the past, Wilson's tours have taken place in person, with groups of hapless participants trailing in his wake feigning pleasure or surprise when shown his mediocre attractions.
This time the tour will be carried out virtually, so people from even the most far-flung countries can participate – should they wish to do so – so long as they have an internet connection.
The Historic Uckfield tour begins at the foot of the High Street where the Uckfield Bridge crosses the River Uck.
The Uck is a tributary of the Ouse, which is the frequently mentioned in the 1937 novel The Family From One End Street, written and illustrated by Eve Garnett (thanks to Sandcrab for this information).
The original bridge was built in 1858, but fell down in 1903 while a traction engine towing a trailer of stones was half way over.
Wilson insists that Lord Lucan 'probably' escaped over this bridge after murdering his family's nanny and escaping abroad.
There is not a shred of evidence to support this, but Lord Lucan has to this day evaded capture – and prosecution.
If you were enjoying this tour in person, it would eventually conclude with 'delicious' refreshments (ant-and-Quorn sandwiches and a glass of ant gin) and there'd be a packet of Souvenir Duck Food to feed the ducks under the bridge – however, since it's a virtual tour I'm afraid you won't be getting those!
Now we shall cross the bridge and take a look at Uckfield Railway Station – please feel free to take photographs of this unique and fascinating building!
After this we will cross Uckfield High Street to see the historic Bridge Cottage – please take care crossing the road as it's very busy and Wilson Vermilingua Tours® can't be held responsible for any accidents!
