Silver pectoral cross

Today's the day ....................... to find treasure

I've been waiting a long time to do what I did today - and it was so worth the wait.  The Galloway Hoard  Exhbition opened today in Kirkcudbright Art Gallery after a stint at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh over the summer.  And there was a real feeling that it was coming home because it was all found a few miles down the road in 2014.

The treasure comprises more than 5 kilograms of silver bullion and many unique and enigmatic gold objects.  The rare preservation of textiles and an unusual range of other materials make the Galloway Hoard the richest collection of Viking-age objects ever found in Britain and Ireland.  It has lain undiscovered in the ground since 900AD - and it now provides an opportunity to shed new light on Scotland's international connections during the Viking Age.

It is a beautifully put-together exhibition using incredible 3D-modelling to show off the artefacts in every detail.  This is a cross which would have been worn on the chest suspended as a pendant from a fine-spiral silver chain.  In extras are some of the gilded disc broches.

If you get the chance, do come and see it all for yourself ...................
