Monument landing 1st airborne division...

Today together with 5 friends we walked an Airborne-walk. A walk in the surroundings of Oosterbeek (near Arnhem) along place where was fought during WW II at the Battle of Arnhem (17-26 September 1944) were 1700 Polish and British soldiers died. The walk came along the former headquarters "Hartenstein Hotel", now the "Airborne Museum", from where Major-General R.E. Urquhart, CB, DSO, commander of the 1st Airborne Division led the battle; the Airborne Cemetery in Oosterbeek, where over 1700 Polish and British soldiers were given their final resting place; the vast woods of the "Bilderberg" where troops fought a hard battle; the drop and landing zones of Wolfheze, Heelsum and Renkum, where the Airborne soldiers were dropped; the "Old Church", which served as a gathering place during the retreat. This a monument in memory of that the 1st airborne division landed in this area on 17th September 1944… @ Heelsum, the Netherlands
