"Just a Young Lad"

....And just another little bit of nostalgia...my husband John joined the Cudgen Headland Surf Lifesaving Club (not far from the Queensland border, on the coast) just before he was 16 and during that year - he obtained his Bronze Medal..

Being a strong lad, it would have been easy for him.
He used to hitch-hike a ride as far as he could to go to training and then walk the rest of the way - something one wouldn't do these days - one would possibly get flattened on the road there anyway - but times were different then, most people knew each other and helped out in some way, especially kids who had no other way to get to training...

He tells me the boys had the big Long Boards which were hollow, and most made their own Boards wherever they could do so, out of bond-wood, over a light timber frame..
Above is a photo of John together with his mates at the time. His time in the Club was such an exciting time for him... He wonders what has happened to the boys sometimes, like we all do - our friends from the past... and don't the years just fly by!!
