Devil's Porridge

This is one of the exhibits at the Devil's Porridge museum we visited. It's on the site of the UK's largest WW1 munitions factory - larger than all the others combined and nine miles wide! Mostly staffed by young women, this is the Senior Staff Club. It, uniquely, allowed men and women to socialise together. Elsewhere the government bought up all the local pubs - and shut them - because it was considered that too much beer was being drunk to the detriment of production. Instead they built snooker rooms and bowling greens. The twins practised making cordite and found a rat in the trenches.

'Devil's Porridge' was a term Conan Doyle coined for what was made after he visited the site in 1914.
