Broadsword Calling Danny Boy

Invented in 1876 by Emile Berliner, the microphone converts sound waves into analog and digital electrical signal.  I hadn’t realised quite how much we rely on this technology -  amplification, hearing aids, broadcasting, film and sound recording, public address systems, two way radio. 

Mr Berliner’s invention has today evolved (that could be disputed) into the bluetooth karaoke microphone.
