Dunham Massey

Today’s visit to the deer park at Dunham Massey is in some ways disappointing. The weather is dull, a dampness suggesting rain could fall at any moment - though we’re lucky and remain dry. The stags in general are absent, deep within the areas marked as sanctuaries and therefore invisible - though some younger ones are closer, gently. practising bellows. The females are scattered here and there, grazing, some still feeding this season’s youngsters.

It takes some effort to find does deep in the bracken of the sanctuary, their presence only indicated by the moving foliage. We’re forbidden from entering the area, so it’s a case of trying to focus between the trees and ferns, catching them as they emerge from feeding, but I like the autumnal setting of their foraging.

We’re out tonight, so comments will be even later than usual, I suspect. I’m also behind in responding  - but thank you for your lovely comments on yesterday’s mono reflections!
