Life in Newburgh on Ythan

An autumnal mushroom

Autumn wouldn't be complete without a few mushroom photographs. This beautiful fungus is, I think, the orange birch bolete Leccinum versipelle. As its name suggests it is usually found in open woodland associated with birch trees.
Leccinum, the generic name, comes from an old Italian word meaning fungus. The specific epithet versipelle is a reference to the changing nature of the surface of the cap as it matures.
