The River Kirkaig

It has been a rather cool, drizzly day, the sky the colour of dishwater with only a rare and passing patch of blue. This has been a good excuse for a mostly indoor day. I am reading a fascinating book, lent to me by David (David and Gita being our lovely hosts at the cabin here) after a wide ranging conversation which touched on the coronavirus pandemic. It’s probably not everyone’s choice of a holiday read - The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History - but it is a great piece of thorough and detailed journalism, offering insights into the causes, the nature, and epidemiology of ‘flu, the creation of vaccines and so on...much of it more or less applicable to Covid. Have I sold it to anyone reading this? ;-)
Late afternoon there was a short break in the clouds and we went for a local stroll down by the sea loch and along a short stretch of the River Kirkaig. The river is in spate after the recent rains, tumbling forcefully towards the sea, mumbling and gurgling as it goes. The nights are getting cooler here and the autumn colours are deepening in shades of dark dull green, russet and gold.

Tomorrow is our last day here. The mountain weather forecast is looking very promising and I am hoping to climb Quinag, another characterful mountain a few miles up the valley.
