3 Inventions from the 20th Century

Well, not the telephone of course. That was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876. He was too lazy to walk into the next office so he rang its occupant and said "Mr Watson, come here, I want to see you".

But the material this phone is made of, polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride or bakelite, was invented in 1907 by Leo Hendrik Baekeland .

Secondly, essential to have near a phone for taking important messages is the biro, or ballpoint, pen.  Invented in 1938 by Laszlo Biro.

Finally, on the left is the gateway to the internet, the router.  It can be argued that the internet we use today was invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 whilst working at the CERN institute in Switzerland.  He actually invented the concept of the World Wide Web making the use of the internet so much more accessible. The internet was actually being used since the 1970s in the form of ARPANET (Advanced Research Project Agency) in the USA and progressed through various protocols into the internet we have today.

Incidentally, when I first started using the internet at home a telephone was essential as all connections were through the phone line via dial-up.
