Cables

At the moment we're at my mother-in-law's while the builders do things to our house. My mother-in-law only moved into her house this summer, the previous owner having passed away and his family sold the house. Unfortunately the house didn't have Internet when orange was installing fibre in the street, so it wasn't cabled up at the time. When planning to move in, my mother-in-law ordered fibre for the property and Orange said they would have to send a man to install it in September.

We are now in mid October and they didn't install anything in September and are now saying they need to send a man with a digger to dig a trench to run the new cable to the house. My mother-in-law did query this with Orange when she was talking to them as all the houses round us have electricity and copper distributed by pole (see blip) and for the fibre they've just strung the fibre up on the same or new poles and run another wire to the house. In most cases now houses have one heavy duty power cable, an old style twisted pair copper for old style phone and one new fibre cable.

On today's walk with the dog I looked at all the houses and in most cases there are indeed three aerial cables to the house, only the rental/second home properties seem to be missing the new fibre cable... I rather liked this cluster as it's pretty typical for the ugly mess that you can find on most street corners.

Our house doesn't have fibre as an option, we do have a new plastic pole at the bottom of the street that's ready to have the fibre installed, but so far our house and the rest of the dog leg that it's at the very end of have no fibre, even though all our neighbours can have it....
